The MFT1710 Multifunction Tester

The Megger MFT1710 is the entry-level tester within the range. Similar to the other models within the series, the MFT1710 offers a 200mA automatic start continuity test that is great for extensive R1+R2 testing and end to end ring final circuit tests.

Insulation resistance testing is possible at either 250V or 500V, which is compliant for circuits and equipment operating at up to 600V. Voltage output can also be locked which assists finding electrical faults. Outputting test voltages greater than 500V will necessitate consideration of a Megger MFT1720 or above.

Loop test options include both high and low current (anti-trip) tests using either a two or a three-wire test lead configuration. PFC/PSCC values (up to 20kA) are calculated by the tester subsequent to conducting a loop test and are easily accessible due to the test result being displayed next to loop reading. The MFT1710 does not permit line-to-line tests and as before, you will need to consider at least a Megger MFT1720 for this option.

The MFT1710 will test various ratings and types of RCD, including ramp testing. Crucially though, the tester will not conduct an automatic RCD test. This ultimately means either:

Additional time is taken for testing an RCD when performing the test by connecting the tester into a final circuit, or,

The RCD will need testing at a distribution board with the final circuit (load) disconnected.

An automatic RCD test will solve both of the above issues. Although and as you will have probably guessed, a Megger MFT1720 or above is a necessary consideration if the issues above are significant.

Is The MFT1710 Right For Me?

Your conclusion may leave you considering a Megger MFT1720. Nevertheless, you need to ask yourself whether a 1000V insulation test, three-phase line testing or an automatic RCD test feature is worth spending an additional £200+VAT.

My advice is to consider the MFT1720 if over half of your work is spent conducting Electrical Installation Condition Reports (EICR’s), although the MFT1710 will be just fine if you are carrying out Electrical Minor Works Certificates (EMWC’s), or the occasional Electrical Installation Certificate (EIC’s).
