ITC Thermal Training Courses

We offer a range of Thermal Training Courses at venues throughout the UK, suitable for thermographers of all levels, in conjunction with the ITC (Infrared Training Centre). The ITC is the leading source of knowledge within infrared science, offering the world’s leading infrared training and thermographer certification programs.

The Category 1 to 3 Thermography Courses prepare you for qualification as an accredited thermographer, allowing you to learn about infrared physics, camera technology and thermographic applications. We also offer a short 1 day Introduction to Thermography, providing attendees with the basics of IR theory, applications, thermal camera operation and software usage.

ITC One-Day Courses

The ITC Introduction to Thermography Training Courses are full one-day courses, educating beginners in thermography and providing hands-on experience with a thermal camera.

These courses are also available with a focus on building or electrical thermography.

The courses include the basics of thermography, basics of emissivity and reflected apparent temperature, introduction to electrical and industrial inspections, camera handling, software installation and test.

The courses offer around 2 hours of camera hands-on experience, looking at many different materials with an overview of report writing software.

Introduction to Thermography Course Outline:

Cat. 1

The Category I Infrared Thermography Training Course is geared to the new infrared camera user and focuses on how thermography is used for a variety of condition monitoring/predictive maintenance applications.

Attendees completing all training course requirements and a thermography field assignment will receive a Category I Infrared Thermography Certification.

Course Outline:
  • Applications including electrical, mechanical, building, medical and R&D.
  • Explanation of camera operation and how the camera converts radiation into an image.
  • Heat and measurement, contact versus non-contact temperature measurement.
  • How radiation is converted into temperature and an introduction to heat transfer.
  • Theory relating to conduction, convection, radiation, blackbodies, transmission emissivity, reflectivity & calibration.
  • Atmospheric & environmental considerations including distance, humidity, air temp and reflected apparent temperature.
  • Temperature definition and measurement, thermodynamics, heat and temperature, heat transfer, conduction, convection and radiation.
  • A look at cross hair measurement, area box/circle, colour alarms and specific dew point and insulation alarms.
  • Camera practice using portable simulated labs, integration of images with reporting software and creation of reports.

Cat. 2

The ITC Category 2 Thermography Course allows thermographers who have already achieved a Category 1 qualification to advance their knowledge of infrared physics, thermal science, thermal cameras and IR theory.

Preparing you for qualification as a Category 2 certified Thermographer, the course covers topics in Infrared Thermography to both deepen and broaden your knowledge about infrared physics, heat science, infrared measurement equipment and its application. As a Category 2 Thermographer you will provide guidance to category 1 personnel in the areas of equipment selection, techniques, limitations, data analysis, corrective actions and reporting.

Course Outline:
  • Reinforce concepts from the Category 1 Course.
  • Heat Transfer Theory, convection, conduction and radiation.
  • Blackbodies, emissivity & scientific laws
  • Optical filters, optical materials, anti-reflective coatings.
  • Atmospheric transmission and attenuation.
  • Detector technologies and calibration.
  • Details of different thermal imaging camera parameters including, NETD, IFOV, MFOV
  • IR window measurement formulae, spectral transmittance of different materials.
  • Transient Thermographic methods analyzed.
  • Experience the latest in infrared inspection report generation and database software.

  • Valid Category 1 Thermography certificate

Cat. 3

ITC’s Category III certification training teaches thermographers how to establish and manage a successful thermography program across a variety of applications and industries.

Content includes instruction on how to establish inspection procedures, apply industry-specific standards, manage training and certification needs, budget for equipment purchases and implement safety protocols.

Participants will also learn how to develop an equipment list, establish severity criteria, set repair priorities, and determine IR survey frequencies; all critical elements of a successful inspection program. Hands-on work is emphasized too with labs that re-enforce the principles discussed including exercises that address advanced thermal science, written procedures and industry standards.

Course Objectives:
  • Identifying safety requirements for thermographers and accompanying personnel for IR surveys.
  • Recognizing key elements of a successful IR Thermography program.
  • Understanding the process used to create an IR procedure.
  • Learning how to create an IR thermography budget.
  • Developing a written practice for Category I, Category II and Category III thermographers.
  • Creating a custom IR report template and proper reporting procedures.

Certification:
  • Category III learning objectives, contact hours, and written exam are based on requirements outlined by ANSI/ASNT CP-105 and CP-189 of the American Society for Non-Destructive Testing.

  • Become a Certified Category 3 Thermographer
