Megger MIT485/2 Insulation Tester

The Megger MIT485/2 Insulation Tester is an advanced instrument which can voltage test insulation up to 500V and 100GΩ despite its small, hand-held design. It is primarily designed for use in the telecommunications or cable testing sectors and the feedback-controlled insulation test voltage is now accurate to within +2% - rather than the previous +10-20% - so testing is more accurate and there is less risk of damage caused by over-voltage. The three terminal connection allows concurrent connection with A, B and E test leads and the user can then simply choose the correct pair using the on-screen interface. Consequently, there is no need to swap wires when taking different measurements, although the Megger MIT485/2 can also be used as a conventional two terminal device.

Pre-set test voltages of 50V, 100V, 250V and 500V make the Megger MIT485/2 quick to use whilst custom voltages can be set between 10 and 500V at the user’s discretion. Results are simplified by a clear pass/fail indication on screen whilst exact, accurate readings are shown for both resistance and the current test voltage. A moving ‘analogue’ arc also portrays dynamic readings and tests are automatically set to time-out after a certain period. Voltage is feedback-controlled, thereby improving safety and accuracy whilst the Megger MIT485/2 automatically detects voltage and prevents testing if it exceeds user-adjusted limits. An insulation buzzer warns the user if insulation is above a certain limit, again fully customisable for the user.

The Megger MIT485/2 has two test currents at 200mA and 20mA for continuity testing whilst the continuous, automatic range now goes from 0.01Ω to 1MΩ. Accuracy is aided by ‘NULL’ lead resistance compensation and ratings are available for REN and differential measurement. True RMS readings are also available for voltage (0 to 600V AC/DC). Other general measurements can be taken by the Megger MIT485/2 including capacitance from 0.1nF to 10µF, and frequency measurement between 15Hz and 400Hz.

Upgrades from the previous Megger MIT480 range include a redesigned case, back-stand, and a 6 cell battery compartment with separate fuse access. The instrument is over-moulded for increased protection and also meets the IP54 weatherproof rating whilst the large, two-line display and analogue needle show measurements clearly and dynamically. Bluetooth connectivity allows data to be easily downloaded in the form of an Excel/CSV file. With numerous safety features and impressive measurement capabilities over insulation testing, capacitance, voltage and continuity testing, the Megger MIT485/2 is a versatile, safe measurement instrument. It comes provided with high-quality silicone leads, an SP5 switched probe, an owner’s information CD, six AA batteries and a hard carry case.
