Meaning existing electrical assets are also being expected to remain reliable for longer.

That makes effective high voltage electrical testing an essential part of modern asset management. Engineers need more than a simple indication that an asset is working today, they need information that can help answer much more valuable questions like:

• Is the insulation beginning to deteriorate?
• Is an electrical asset behaving differently from previous measurements?
• Are there early warning signs of a developing fault?
• Does switchgear require closer investigation?
• Could maintenance be planned before a failure forces the decision?
• What does the test data actually tell us about asset condition?

The better we become at answering these questions, the greater our opportunity to move away from reactive maintenance. The shift is important, because finding a fault is useful but finding the evidence of a developing fault before it becomes a failure is considerably more valuable.

From Electrical Testing To Asset Intelligence

For many years, electrical testing was often viewed principally as a means of establishing compliance or proving that an asset met a particular requirement. While those functions remain essential, the modern test and measurement technology is capable of contributing to a much wider picture. 

Power and electrical measurements can expose performance issues that may otherwise remain hidden, whilst condition monitoring can further reveal changes over time rather than providing a single snapshot. Each instrument used is therefore only part of the equation, the real objective is better engineering information. Information that helps experienced people make better decisions about safety, maintenance, intervention and investment. This is one of the key subjects I am particularly looking forward to discussing at Faraday Power Group Event #3.

When each perspective is brought together, everybody has an opportunity to learn something.

There could hardly be a more relevant environment for the event than The Faraday Centre at the Wilton Centre in Redcar & Cleveland.
