IET Code of Practice: Inspection & Testing of Electrical Equipment (5th Edition)

The IET Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment 5th Edition is a detailed and comprehensive guide for UK inspection and testing of electrical appliances. Fully reflective of modern practices and equipment, exhaustive guidance is provided for duty holders, managers, administrators and inspectors performing tests, PAT or otherwise, on electrical appliances.

The 5th Edition includes a greater emphasis on managing electrical equipment within the workplace, specifically those items which are not covered by other maintenance regimes such as air-conditioning units and security access control systems. One of the largest changes to the fifth edition is a full review of the frequency of testing. This was originally displayed in Table 7.1 of the 4th edition, however this has now been removed. New appendices have been added with guidance for low-risk equipment and environments such as IT sever racks alongside sections with example risk assessments, basic electrical theory primers and much more.

Whereas the previous layout was split into half, the IET Code of Practice 5th Edition is now presented as a series of sections covering everything from the need for electrical maintenance through to the frequency of testing. To comply with the modern workplace and safety standards, apart from in explanatory notes the words 'portable' and 'appliance' are never used. Terms such as ‘stationary’, ‘fixed’, ‘portable’ and ‘moveable’ are also removed as the focus is on the verification of equipment for safety regardless of its unrelated ability to move.

The Code of practice includes information on:

  • Legislation
  • Inspection and testing
  • Common faults
  • Surge Protected devices
  • Testing procedures
  • Pass and fail levels
  • Formal visual inspections
  • PAT Testing Equipment
  • Risk based assessments
  • Frequency of inspection
  • And more...
