IPEC Parabolic Reflector Add-on Sensor

The IPEC Parabolic Reflector Add-on Sensor is an ultrasonic sensor used to detect partial discharge activity on exposed high-voltage insulating surfaces. Since it focuses on the ultrasonic signals, the reflector increases detection sensitivity, allowing it to be effective at up to 100m. This makes it particularly effective in outdoor switchyards to detect surface discharge on string and post insulators, sealing ends and other exposed high-voltage equipment.

Use of the Reflector

When connected to the IPEC PD-SGS/PD Detector and operated on Acoustic Emission (AE) mode, the reflector can be pointed directly at the high-voltage equipment being inspected.

The operator can use the integrated red-dot viewfinder, looking through it with both eyes open to align the dot with the centre of the inspection area and target accurately. The PD-SGS/PD Detector will then register a dB reading on its display and generate an audible output relative to the level of PD activity detected.

For outdoor inspection, using headphones is recommended to help to minimise interference from environmental noises. Because acoustic PD detection is influenced by natural environmental variations, results are best evaluated as relative comparisons between similar assets rather than absolute measurements.

The reflector requires only minor maintenance, such as wiping it with a damp cloth and avoiding solvents, as well as replacing the battery with CR2032 3V batteries.
