IPEC VDS Add-on Sensor

The IPEC VDS Add-on Sensor detects and assesses the presence and severity of partial discharge (PD) activity within air- or gas-insulated switchgear (AIS/GIS). By using existing VDS/VPIS ports, which are directly coupled to the high-voltage (HV) conductor, the sensor provides a safe, fast, and non-intrusive method for detecting insulation defects.

Partial discharges generate small, high-frequency signals that travel along metallic surfaces before emerging through VDS/VPIS ports. When connected to an IPEC PD Detector Pro via a standard banana connector, the IPEC VDS Sensor captures, characterises, and quantifies these emissions in order to assess the severity of insulation degradation.

Because the VDS ports are directly coupled to the high voltage (HV), the sensor delivers higher PD detection sensitivity compared to external sensors, making it especially effective in medium-voltage GIS applications where conventional PD detection methods may be limited.
