Metrohm WPC Wireless Phase Comparator Kit
The Metrohm WPC Wireless Phase Comparator Kit is an essential safety and diagnostic tool used to confirm whether two energised conductors are in phase before making connections. It uses wireless communication between two handheld units rather than relying on physical tests between test points. This removes the need for trailing cables and improves operator safety, while speeding up phase comparison in the field. It is particularly valuable when working on overhead lines, substations, and switchgear where distance, access, and safety are critical.
The Metrohm WPC Kit range offers two configurations to suit different voltage levels and applications. The WPC 1000 is designed for 11/33kV systems, making it ideal for standard distribution networks and routine maintenance work. In contrast, the WPC 2000 extends capability up to 66/132kV, providing a robust solution for higher-voltage transmission environments. Both kits follow the same operating principle and user-friendly design, but the WPC 2000 is engineered to withstand and accurately measure at significantly higher voltages. Choosing between them comes down to your working voltage range, with the WPC 1000 covering typical utility tasks and the WPC 2000 offering the added assurance needed for more demanding high-voltage applications.
Each kit is supplied in a durable ABS carry case and includes a transmitter (TX), receiver (RX), 40mm hook contact electrodes, rod adaptors (Bowthorpe or universal star wheel), an accessories bag, and a polymer cleaning kit. A dedicated switchgear kit is also available for the WPC 1000, extending its usability in enclosed environments. Both configurations comply with IEC 61481 standards, ensuring dependable performance and safety in live working conditions.
Wireless Phase Comparator Transmitter (TX)
The transmitter module is used to make contact with the first live conductor. Once the voltage exceeds the predefined threshold, the device automatically initiates a voltage checking sequence. If the conductor remains live after approximately five seconds, solid red LEDs confirm detection and the phase angle information is transmitted wirelessly to the receiver. This process is identical across both the WPC 1000 and WPC 2000.
Wireless Phase Comparator Receiver (RX)
The receiver module is applied to the second conductor and performs its own voltage verification. When the voltage threshold is met and sustained, a solid red LED confirms a live line. The receiver then interprets the signal from the transmitter to determine the phase relationship. An in-phase condition (≤ ±10°) is clearly indicated by red and green LEDs accompanied by a continuous audible tone. An out-of-phase condition (> ±20°) is shown by a solid red LED, providing an immediate and unambiguous result. High-intensity LEDs and a powerful buzzer ensure visibility and audibility even in bright daylight or noisy substations.
Both the WPC 1000 and WPC 2000 are battery-operated, fully portable, and designed for use with suitable insulating operating rods to maintain safe working distances. The shared interface keeps training simple, while the differing voltage capabilities allow you to select the right kit for your network.
