The John Drummond MTL20B Test Lamp is an extremely useful two-pole voltage detector that boasts a very clear visual warning system when voltage is detected. Four LED rings on the top of the unit are labelled as 50V, 120V, 230V and 400V and light up brightly enough to be seen even in strong sunlight. The three lower value rings illuminate red whilst the fourth, 400V ring glows blue to make it very clear when this voltage has been exceeded. The stacked design of the LED display allows it to be seen from all angles so indications are always clear. The high-input impedance ensures that there is little to no impact on the circuit under test whilst the buttons on each pole draw more current in order to negate phantom voltage. This also helps locate potentially dangerous voltage levels.

Responses are given in less than 0.1 second and the ergonomic design makes the Drummond MTL20B easy to use. The instrument operates up to 750V DC and 500V AC and is rated to 1000V Cat III and 600V Cat IV so the user can have peace of mind during operation. The double-insulated wire has a contrasting colour on the inner layer to highlight wear or damage and the insulated tips expose just 4mm of metal, thereby providing further security for the user. The instrument is supplied with two straight probes and a right-angle probe so it is suitable for the majority of tests. This well-built instrument requires no batteries and comes with a 2-year manufacturer’s warranty.
