Megger DET2/3 High Resolution Earth Tester

The Megger DET2/3 High Resolution Earth Tester is a sophisticated tester intended for use on large earthing systems where it is important to measure ground electrode resistance and soil resistivity. It has a single fully automatic range from 0.01Ω to 20kΩ with an accuracy of ±0.5% and a maximum resolution of 1mΩ. This can be applied across two-, three- and four-pole testing and the tester meets standards including BS7430 (earthing/grounding), BS-EN-62305 (lightning protection), BS-EN-50122-1 (railways) and IEEE Standard 81.

Several features facilitate easier testing with the Megger DET2/3. The onboard microprocessor can identify errors and provides all pertinent information on screen. The test frequency (10Hz to 200Hz) and current (<50mA) can be easily adjusted along with the filtering in order to help maintain accuracy in difficult conditions.

The wide band of test current frequencies with an excellent resolution of 0.5Hz helps cancel out noise from the tester’s surroundings. Automatic frequency selection, meanwhile, will find the frequencies with the lowest noise level in order to carry out testing. Test current, frequency and filtering are saved to the earth tester’s internal memory for later use.

Other measurement options on the Megger DET2/3 include 3- & 4-pole ART resistance measurements (0.01Ω to 10kΩ); stakeless resistance measurement (0.01Ω to 10kΩ); and leakage current measurement (0.00A to 2.00A) in addition to various continuity measurements and bonding tests. The tester is therefore an extremely comprehensive instrument with a particular aptitude for complicated earthing systems.

The Megger DET2/3 has a large colour display that clearly displays readings and is also capable of providing a live trace of readings with a graphical display of the amount of noise from the system under test. The large internal memory has enough space for 5000 records with 900,000 data points as well as previously used test settings. Data can be downloaded via the USB port to a PC running PowerDB™ software. The large memory also facilitates the Wenner and Schlumberger methods of resistivity calculation.

A robust dual case design keeps the Megger DET2/3 safe from the elements. The tougher outer layer protects against impacts and the inner layer is fire resistant whilst the whole unit benefits from an IP65 ingress protection rating. The rechargeable battery lasts for up to 10 hours and has a fast recharge up to 50% or three-hour charge to full power. It is rated Cat IV 300V and weighs just 4.5kg.

The Megger DET2/3 Earth Tester is available as a standalone instrument which comes supplied with a charger, calibration verifier instrument, pouch and carry strap but no leads or clamps. It is also possible to upgrade to a 50m test set or 100m set that include four test cables (50m & 30m or 100m & 60m), voltage and current clamps, four test spikes, and two 1.5m test leads.
