Megger HVB10 High Voltage Bridge

The Megger HVB10 High Voltage Bridge is a highly-accurate, high-voltage bridge which has been expertly designed to locate cable and sheath faults, and is especially suited for long HV cables. With a top-range resolution, intermittent fault detection function, and load adaptation for faster cable charging, the HVB10 is an extremely useful tool for utilities that want to reduce downtime typically associated with repairs. The HVB10 High Voltage Bridge has two different methods for fault location, which are as follows:

  • Standard Mode – This provides reliable and quality results for typical sheath faults, with fault resistances of up to several hundred kilo-ohms and shield cross-sections between 25 and 50mm2. A measurement can usually be completed in around 30 seconds.
  • High Accuracy Mode – This takes approximately 1 minute for the algorithm to complete, but utilises the full potential of the HVB10’s measuring and control circuits. This mode is ideally suited for prelocating difficult, high-resistive faults (for example, in the inner insulation of PILC cables), and an intermittent fault detection algorithm is applied to gain a result under challenging conditions with sparking faults.

The HVB10 is designed to locate cable faults where traditional technologies, such as TDR or ARM, reach their limits. On very long or complex cables, like subsea or cross-bonded types, large reflections can obscure results, which can make fault prelocation extremely difficult, Unlike impedance-based reflection methods, the HVB10 measure resistance, providing information that ensures greater accuracy. This makes it especially valuable for detecting cable interruptions, short circuits, and high-resistance faults that impulse reflection methods cannot identify.

The HVB10 is also highly effective for sheath fault testing. Prelocation is carried out automatically, requiring only basic inputs such as test voltage and cable length, while the results are clearly evaluated and reported on. For pinpointing sheath faults, it supports both the pulsed DC step voltage method (when paired with an earth fault probe such as the Megger ESG NT2) and A-frame techniques at 3 or 4.8Hz. Built for versatility, the HVB10 can operate on mains power (88-264V AC) or via its rechargeable battery for at least two hours, with the option to charge it from 12/24V DC. This makes it a robust, flexible tool for reliable cable fault location, even on very long installations.

Key Features

  • High-accuracy, high-voltage bridge designed for locating cable and sheath faults, especially on long HV cables
  • Standard mode which offers reliable results for typical sheath faults (up to several hundred kΩ, 25–50 mm² shields) in ~30 seconds
  • High accuracy mode which offers ~1-minute measurements for prelocating difficult, high-resistive faults with intermittent fault detection
  • Utilises resistance-based measurement for accurate fault location where TDR or ARM methods struggle (e.g. subsea or cross-bonded cables)
  • Capable of detecting cable interruptions, short circuits, and high-resistance faults not identifiable with impulse reflection methods
  • Automatic sheath fault prelocation with simple test voltage and cable length input
  • Pinpointing via pulsed DC step voltage (with optional ESG NT2 probe) or A-frame techniques at 3 or 4.8Hz
  • Operates from 88-264V AC mains integrated rechargeable battery (minimum 2 hours runtime, 12/24V DC charging option)
  • Designed for utilities and network operators to reduce downtime and improve repair efficiency
