Megger INGVAR Primary Current Injection Test System

The Megger INGVAR Primary Current Injection Test System has been expertly designed for primary injection testing of protective relay equipment and circuit breakers. The system consists of both a control unit and a current unit, which are both portable, and it can also test the turns ratio of current transformers and for other applications that require high valuable currents. The control unit is equipped with a number of advanced features, including a powerful measurement section that is able to display turns ratio, as well as time, voltage and current. A second measurement channel can also be used to test an additional current or voltage. The INGVAR system also includes a fast-acting hold function that freezes the reading on the digital display when one of the following occurs: a voltage or contact signal is detected at the stop input, the test object interrupts the current, or the current injection is manually stopped. This helps to ensure that even brief measurement results are captured and easy to review.

The INGVAR system is specifically designed for primary current injection and circuit breaker testing, where high current and precise measurement of short-duration current flow are essential. It measures the operating time of low-voltage breakers without the need for additional contacts, automatically stopping the test the moment the breaker interrupts the current. To ensure accuracy and repeatability, the output current is initiated at the zero-crossing point of the waveform, minimising DC offset.

INGVAR also supports current transformer (CT) testing, displaying the primary and secondary current or the turns ratio directly, without requiring manual calculations. Secondary burden can also be measured and shown in VA. Polarity testing is straightforward, with clear marking of output polarities and phase displacement display. The system also handles heat run tests, applying current continuously or in programmable intervals with time tracking in minutes and hours, making it suitable for long-duration tests. INGVAR also measures operating limits, timing sequences, and lockout counts for automatic reclosers and sectionalisers, and also has programmable reclosing settings. Additionally, it is able to verify the intergrity of safety-ground devices by injecting current and measuring voltage drop to determine impedance.

Megger part number: BH-72490

Key Features

  • Has a high current output for testing protective relays, breakers, and measuring short-duration currents without external contacts
  • Includes a separate control and current unit, which are both portable for use in the field
  • Displays current, voltage, time, power factor, phase angle, and CT turns radio with no manual calculations needed
  • A fast hold function captures and freezes short-duration readings when current is interrupted, or stop input is triggered
  • Output current is initiated at waveform zero-crossing for repeatable results and minimised DC offset
  • Conducts current transformer testing by directing turns ratio display, secondary burden in VA, and polarity/phase displacement indication
  • Supports long-duration tests with continuous or programmable interval current injection
  • Measures operating limits, reclose sequences, and lockout operation counts with user-programmable settings
  • Verifies safety-ground integrity by injecting current and measuring impedance via voltage drop
