Electric Vehicle Charging Blog Banner

With a huge focus on electric vehicles nowadays, the UK government made a bold move to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles with the introduction of Part S of the UK's Building Regulations last summer (requiring the installation of EV charge points in all new build and retrofit homes, plus commercial buildings with 10 or more parking spaces) and in doing so gave a wealth of opportunity to EVSE installers.

The government hopes these regulations will close the current 'electric vehicle to EV charger ratio' gap and trigger further investment into the EV sector. While this could be seen as a major game changer as the country steps up its efforts to reduce emissions and transition to EVs, with the 2030 UK ban on all new petrol and diesel cars on the horizon, it's likely to be the first of more changes within the EV industry over the coming years.

Regulation Updates

One of the key changes in these regulations is the requirement for all new homes to have an EV charge point installed, meaning that developers and builders will need to work closely with EV charge point installers to ensure that the necessary infrastructure is in place. This is crucial if electric vehicles are to play their part in helping the UK get net zero by 2050.

Another important change is the simplification of the process for obtaining planning permission for EV charge points. Under the new regulations, EV charge point installers will no longer need to apply for planning permission for most installations, making it much easier and quicker to get charging infrastructure in place.

The impact of these changes means many will likely turn to EV charger installers to ensure that properties abide by the new requirements. With the increased demand for EV charge points, there will be more opportunities for companies to grow and expand their businesses. Additionally, the simplification of the planning process will make it easier for installers to get new projects off the ground, which will help to create jobs and boost the economy.

With the 2030 deadline fast approaching, the new UK building regulations reforms are a positive step forward for EV charge point installers, providing new opportunities for growth and expansion, while promoting the use of electric vehicles - an integral part in the UK's journey to net zero. However, it's important to note that the new regulations are not without their challenges with the increasing demand. For example, EV charge point installers will need to ensure that they have the necessary skills and expertise to install the infrastructure, to be vigilant and to adapt to changing regulations and requirements.
